Devotee.
I’m beginning to realize that anyone who has a bunch of people following them in life scares me. In so many of the bigger institutions in life who has hundreds or thousands of constituents behind one person, it always seems that that person isn’t in their right mind. The government, there’s no way that it seems politicians can get to the head without crushing someone along the way. Celebrities always seem off, and even more so when they are active in creating a fan base. Even religious leaders, some of the things I’ve heard people say or say they’d do for the sake of having people follow them flat out scares me. Even Jesus, who was God incarnate, only had 12 disciples, though maybe had many following him, the instances of the thousands He fed gave inclination that they lived in the area, but not close enough to get food, so they weren’t following Him. And that was God! Having, I’d venture to guess even high, no more than 100 people following him at once; and then, was abandoned by almost all at His death. Until the church, which wasn’t following any one man, but God. Businesses, I feel that you can probably become a CEO and maybe not be messed up, but the company’s not following you, the company is an entity.
I was reading an article by the BBC that sparked this, about a guru in India who had all the radical ideas and wanted to run for government. He said he had millions of followers world wide, and yet there’s a whole organization founded in India to debunk the things gurus say that aren’t true. This just made me think of that.
Do you believe it’s possible to have thousands of followers and not be corrupt, or do you not trust institutions?
